The Other Day, I Think Just Last Week, I Was Walking Out Of My Street. I Had Just Shut The Gate And Walked A Few Seconds When Some Little Children Passed By.
I Am A Keen Learner, So Of Course, They Had My Attention. The Oldest Was Probably 12.
The First Coherent Thing I Made Out From Their Chatter Was A Statement By A Sweet Little Boy.
He Would Not Be Older Than 6.
He Said, “Me, I Wonder Why Rich People Like To Buy Big Beds.” My Feet Kept Walking But My Heart Paused In That Moment.
That Boy.
He Was Only A Child, But He Already Believed He Was In A War. And That There Are Two Sides:
The Rich Versus The Poor. Big Sigh.
From The Body Language And Words Emanating From The Little Group, You Could Already Pick The Strong Scent Of Resentment.
Us Against Them. Them Versus Us.
Unfortunately, This Boy Is Just Another Figure In The Statistics Of Misinformed Children. Children Who Become Adults.
Adults Who Become Working Parts Of A Society.
Adults Who Will Grow Tired Of Lack And All The Evils Poverty Brings.
Adults Who Will Want To Live Comfortably And Afford Some Luxury, Or At Least, The Basic Needs Of Life.
But Their Subconscious Will Sabotage Every Conscious Attempt To Be Anything Other Than Poor.
They Will Be At War With Themselves. One Part Wants Wealth.
The Other Part Fights It.
“Because Rich People Are Greedy Pigs.” “Rich People Are Into Blood Money.”
“Rich People Are The Ones Stealing Nigeria’s Money.”
“Rich People Are Stingy And Selfish.”
And Yet, Somehow, These Rich People Are Happy. Happier Than Them.
It Does Not Add Up.
After All, There Is No Peace For The Wicked, So, How Are These People Able To Live Such Healthy And Happy Lives?
When These Questions Go Unanswered For A Long While, The Subconscious Gives An Answer.
One They Can Relate With. “Money Is Not Everything.”
But Then They Call Happiness And Money Answers. They Call Health And Money Answers.
They Call Security And Money Answers.
They Call Enjoyment And Money Still Answers.
They Call Recognition, The Green Guy Still Shows Up. They Call Provision And Money Says “I’m Right Here.”
Because Money Answereth All Things.
More Questions. No Answers.
After Years Of Frustration, They Settle For The Myth That This World Was Created For Two Kinds Of People:
The Rich And The Poor.
That Whatever Lot You Were Dealt Is The Lot You Stay With.
But God Looks And Says,
“The Rich And The Poor Dwell Together, The Lord God Is The Maker Of Them ALL.”
Not The Maker Of Them SO.
He Made Them All. He Did Not Make Them So.
And He Looks To See If Any Understands, But None Does. So They Die Like Mere Men.
Created Gods, But Dying Like Mere Mortals. For Want Of Understanding.
Then These Children Who Become Adults, Hurt, Broken And Frustrated, Buy The Lie And Sell It To Their Children Too.
So, 40 Years Down The Line, You Will Step Off Your Driveway, And Unto The Street.
And You Will Pass A Little Girl, Barely 6. She Will Wonder Aloud To Your Hearing:
“I Wonder Why Rich People Live In Big Houses.” And She Will Eye You Warily As She Hurries Past.
It’s Just A Different Gender.
But The Same Pattern. And The Cycle Continues.
P.S: Most Of Us Were Raised In “Us Against Them” Homes, And We’d Like To Deny It, But Our Lives Are Saying Otherwise.
